Maseno University was on Tuesday closed indefinitely following the killing of 2 students after the students clashed with police who had been sent to quell the violence which had erupted between two rival groups. The deceased was a first year medical student. Unconfirmed reports indicated that another student, a woman, died this morning as a result of the injuries.
Maseno University was on Tuesday closed indefinitely following the killing
of 2 students during riots that were sparked after police allegedly shot at a
vehicle that was being used by some students for campaigning in the SOMU elections
on Monday night. The Students clashed with police who had been sent to quell
the violence which had erupted between two rival groups.
One
student died on arrival at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital,
while six others sustained injuries. The deceased was a first year medical
student. Assistant IG Joseph Keitany said the
student was among those who jumped off the truck while running away from
police, who lobbed teargas canisters. Unconfirmed reports indicated that another
student, a lady, died this morning as a result of the injuries.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Catherine Muhoma on behalf of the acting university
Chancellor said that the students were ordered to vacate the
school premises with immediate effect. The notice read as follows:SEE ALSO: Egerton University 'Fake' Engineering Students sent home.
"Following the events of last night which
resulted in the death of a student, and the skirmishes with the police this
morning, the University environment has become volatile and not condusive to
learning. The university senate has therefore decided that the University be closed
with immediate effect.
Students should therefore vacate the
University premises within 30 minutes."
This comes just days after student arsonists and rioters barred from contesting in student elections set the Finance and Dean of Students offices on fire.
